Baptists detail concern about religious freedom violations in Azerbaijan at the United Nations

EBF - May 08, 2013

The Baptist World Alliance has drawn up a Report detailing religious freedom violations affecting Baptist pastors and congregations in Azerbaijan which has been sent to various national delegations at the United Nations in Geneva. Much of the research was carried out by the EBF Religious Freedom representative, Christer Daelander (Sweden) who also represents the BWA at the UN in Geneva.

Recently we heard that the two pastors imprisoned in Azerbaijan some years ago, and then set free after representations by the EBF, BWA and the personal intervention of President Jimmy Carter, had once again been arrested and fined large some soy money. The fines have since been rescinded, but these pastors and others in Azerbaijan continue to suffer harassment by the authorities. The Report also details the continuing problems with obtaining legal registration of churches.
