Easter Processions in Tbilisi

Klaus Rösler - April 23, 2012

T b i l i s i - In the days leading up to Easter, several Baptists from the Peace Cathedral in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi promoted the Christian faith with two processions. “We want to let people know that Jesus Christ was crucified for people,” explained Bishop Ilia Osephashvili (Tbilisi). According to him, they wanted at the same time to make it clear that all Christian traditions share the same faith in Jesus Christ, and for this reason, peace should reign among them. As the Bishop told the EBPS, the 500-member congregation has held the processions on Palm Sunday and Good Friday for over ten years. However, only a small portion of church members takes part in them. On Palm Sunday, the Baptists set out alone through the city; on Good Friday, they were joined by Catholics, Lutherans, and members of the Armenian Apostolic Church for the procession of the cross. “We visited these churches, and as a sign of the one faith that unites us, we recited the Lord’s Prayer in each church,” added Osephashvili. Those passersby with whom they spoke along the way responded “very positively”. There were no negative reactions from the predominant Orthodox Church. Seventy-five churches with about 5,200 members belong to the Union of Evangelical Baptist Churches of Georgia. Eighty-four percent of the 4.5 million inhabitants of Georgia belong to the Georgian Orthodox Apostolic Church; about 10 percent are Muslim.
