Jerusalem: Anti-Christian Graffiti on Baptist church

Klaus Rösler - February 27, 2012

J e r u s a l e m – In Jerusalem, unknown vandals have smeared the building of the Baptist church with anti-Christian sayings. Three cars in the church parking lot were also damaged, including having their tires slashed. Two of the cars belong to Jewish neighbours of the church, who have permission to use the parking lot. The incident took place on February 20th. Sayings such as “We’re going to crucify you”, “Death to Christians”, and “Jesus be cursed” were sprayed in Hebrew on the walls and cars. The expression “Price Tag” was also used. In explanation, a police spokesman said that the Hebrew lettering “Price Tag” led to suspicion that the perpetrators were radical settlers. According to him, this lettering is used to warn the government to do something about the Jewish Settlements on the West Bank. Similar sayings were daubed on the walls of a Greek Orthodox cloister, also in Jerusalem, in early February. In the view of Badur Mansour (Nazareth), the General Secretary of the Israeli Baptist Union, these incidents are a sign of a growing attitude of violence and decreasing tolerance in Israeli society. The Baptist church was built in 1923, and has already been damaged twice by arson. Four congregations meet in the building, which is run by Southern Baptists in the United States: two English-speaking, one Hebrew-speaking and one Russian-speaking. There are 20 Baptist churches in Israel, with about 800 members.
