The Church’s Mandate: Preventing Men from Visiting Prostitutes

Klaus Rösler - October 07, 2008

L i s b o n – European Baptists want to commit themselves to stopping men from visiting prostitutes. Swedish Baptist Pastor Sven-Gunnar Liden (Stockholm), Chairman of the European Baptist Federation’s (EBF) Anti-Trafficking working group, reported at EBF-Council sessions in Lisbon/Portugal from 24 to 27 September. The Anti-Trafficking group is working on a handbook for all European congregations with ideas on how best to curtail prostitution. If the demand for prostitutes diminishes, then the practice of human trafficking and women forced into prostitution will also decrease. Considering that human trafficking destroys people, it is indeed “a major topic for our churches”. Liden strongly welcomed new Swedish legislation making the visiting of prostitutes illegal. He called on congregations to declare 18 October a day of prayer against trafficking. He also warned of unrealistic expectations regarding his working group: “Everything of quality grows slowly."
